Addressing the Muscular Imbalances of the Flute Playing Position

Posted in General Information by Karen Lonsdale on April 9, 2009

Welcome to my research site, which discusses my research on the muscular imbalances inherent in the flute playing position, with the intention of helping flute players better understand how to prevent and manage playing related discomfort, tension or pain.  While a perfect position for the spine may not be achievable in a uni-lateral stance, flute players can aim to optimise the way they hold the flute, resulting in both musical and physical benefits.  Since commencing the research at Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium in 2007, attendees at my conference presentations and members of flute email lists have asked where to find more information about how to prevent and manage flute playing related injuries.   Musicians generally receive little to no information during their training on the physical aspects of playing the flute.  With this in mind, I’ve built a site at which flute players can learn more about this topic.

In addition to researching, I’ve been a professional flute player for over 20 years.  Following is a short video, with a track from my CD, “Vocalise”.  I invite you to listen, then click here to read more about  how I became interested in researching about the muscular imbalances of the flute playing position.
